The DCF blog post above has been removed. It was quite negative and also quite public so I deleted it. Here's what happened. I got to my hotel in Key West and the desk clerk said my card was coming up rejected. So I paid cash for the first night and arranged to have more cash wired to me. It turned out that VISA had deactivated my card. I don't know if it was related to the security breach that had just happened to VISA or if they didn't like my pattern of usage all along the Gulf coast. In any case, the card was toast and I had to wait two weeks for a replacement to be mailed to my home. Of course, that wouldn't do me any good because I wasn't home! My bank, the New Mexico Educator's Federal Credit Union in Albuquerque, was no help at all. They said it was a VISA issue. All they could do was help my wife to wire me some cash. I got the cash the next day and used cash for all my purchases for the rest of the trip. Have you ever tried using cash at some motels? I was immediately suspected of being a dirty biker who was ready to tear up the room with all of buddies. I had to wait for my room to be "inspected" before I could check out. Jeez.
